Pedro López López began his piano studies with Gloria Olaya and continued studying music theory and composition at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid with Antón García Abril and Zulema de la Cruz. While finishing his composition studies, he decided to move to The Netherlands in 2001 to study orchestral conducting at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in The Hague with maestros Jac van Steen and Kenneth Montgomery.

Highlights of his conducting career include the Dutch premiere of Stockausen’s Hoch-Zeiten with Radio Filharmonisch Orkest at Concertgebouw Amsterdam, working alongside the composer; and performances with orchestras such as Brabants Orkest (Ravel’s Sheherazade and Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite), Orchestre de Chambre de Laussane (Mozart’s Così fan tutte) and Dartington Festival Orchestra (Puccini’s Madama Butterfly). Contemporary ensembles include the Alluna Ensemble (Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire) and the RIAM Winds & Percussion Ensemble (Messiaen’s Oiseaux Exotiques). Soloists such as Hugh Tinney, Carla Leurs, Redmond O’Toole, Hanna Shybayeva, Sylvia O’Brien, Camiel Boomsma and Olivia Doflein (Scheepers) have performed under his baton.

During his stay in The Netherlands he conducted non professional orchestras such as Goois Symfonie Orkest, Symfonieorkest Eindhoven and Deventer Kamerorkest among others. He has often collaborated with a number of youth ensembles, including Trinity College Orchestra (Dublin), VU-Kamerorkest, UvA-Orkest J.Pzn Sweelinck and Concerto Grosso Youth Orchestra (CODARTS, Rotterdam). As an assistant conductor, he has worked alongside maestros Jac van Steen (BBC National Orchestra of Wales), Kenneth Montgomery (Radio Kamer Filharmonie and St. Cecilia Orchestra), José Esandi (Residentie Orkest) and Gerhard Markson (RIAM Philharmonia). He is the Assistant Conductor of the newly created RIAM Philharmonia at the Royal Irish Academy of Music.

In 2012 and 2013 he was member of the jury at Orkestival, the annual festival of youth orchestras in The Netherlands held at Concertgebouw Amsterdam.

An avid composer Pedro has written for piano, string quartet, electronics, ensemble and orchestra, including microtonal compositions such as Chroma, premiered by Nieuw Ensemble; the soundtrack to J. Espasa’s play Códigos; or The quest, an opera-play for children composed for Da Capo Academy, London. He is the founder and editor of LM Music Editions, a digital music publisher which works alongside FASO (Federation of Amateur orchestras in The Netherlands).

Pedro López López is a candidate to Doctor in Performance (PhD in Orchestral Conducting) at the Royal Irish Academy of Music/Trinity College Dublin. His fields of interest and research include late eighteenth century Italian opera and early twentieth century Spanish orchestral music.
